  Rossman, Douglas "Dag" and Sharon Rossman:VALHALLA IN AMERICA:  NORSE MYTHS IN WOOD AT ROCK ISLAND STATE PARK, WISCONSIN.  Built within what is now Rock Island State Park by Icelandic immigrant Chester Hjortur Thordarson, his country estate Viking Hall was an attempt, as the Rossmans say, to "recapture the homeland of (Thordarson's) memory and imagination."  (Rock Island State Park and Viking Hall belong to the state of Wisconsin.)  In the late 1920s or early 1930s, Thordarsson commissioned the Icelandic artist, Haldor Einarsson, to carve Viking Hall's furniture with incredibly detailed scenes from Norse mythology--and with the names of the mythological characters in Norse Runes. Most of the photographs of the furniture were taken by William Olson. The Rossmans have arranged their text about the carvings in thematic order, so that perusing this marvelous book gives the reader a guided tour not only of Einarsson's powerful artwork, but of Norse mythology itself. Here's a carving with Mani, the Moon, guiding the Moon chariot across the night sky. Note that while the Moon being guided is full, but both the chariot itself, and the shape of Mani's head, hat and beard, are crescent Moons. With Mani are two human children, Hjuki and Bil, whom Mani caught while they were carrying water from a well--the Jack and Jill nursery rhyme was based on this myth.
